Abstract:
Manuscript correspondence containing brief letters and typescript poems (some with annotations) between two San Francisco
politicians. Some of the letters are addressed to Phelan in his capacity as Senator and from Taylor in his capacity as mayor
of San Francisco. One letter is on Mayor's Office (San Francisco) letterhead stationery. One letter contains a manuscript
poem composed for Phelan titled, "A Californian with Attica." Typescript poems by Taylor include "Carcassone," "Carcassone
Attained," and "Hymn to the Sun [annotated]." Also contains a letter to Phelan signed by Eunice Robeson Taylor.

1907-1910.
James Duval Phelan, businessman, political leader, patron of the arts, and philanthropist, was born in San Francisco on April
20, 1861. He graduated from St. Ignatius University, San Francisco, in 1881 and studied law at the University of California,
Berkeley. He served as San Francisco mayor and United States Senator from California.
