Eugene A. Hammel was born in New York City on March 18, 1930. He received his B.A. (1951) and Ph.D. (1959) degrees in anthropology
from the the University of California, Berkeley, where he currently serves as emeritus professor of anthropology and demography.
His scholarly interests include a wide range of of topics, and he has done extensive field work, especially in Meso-America
and Eastern Europe.
