Title:
Etel Adnan papers, 1961-2018
Creator/Contributor:
Adnan, Etel, creator, creator.
Creator/Contributor:
Fattal, Simone, correspondent.
Abstract:
Contains personal and professional correspondence; manuscripts; materials about events; articles about, and interviews with,
Adnan; a small amount of personalia; audiocassette tapes; and periodicals. Materials are in English, French, and Arabic. Aside
from a few files of letters from individuals, Adnan's correspondence was arranged chronologically, by year, and includes materials
about events related to her work (such as art exhibits, lectures, musical performances, readings, and theatrical performances).
The bulk of the correspondence is incoming. There are letters from artists, poets, and publishers, as well as letters to Simone
Fattal and the Post-Apollo Press. There are some letters from Adnan scattered throughout, but most of the outgoing correspondence
consists of letters to Fawwaz Traboulsi, and emails related to the Post-Apollo Press. Correspondents include Eric Barnes,
Lindsey Boldt, Lyn Hejinian, Joanne Kyger, Leslie Scalapino, Jennifer Scappettone and Stacy Szymaszek. Manuscripts are handwritten
and typescript drafts of plays, poems, and essays. These are arranged alphabetically by title or first lines of text, and
translations of the same title were kept together. The audiocassette tapes include readings by Adnan. Original folder titles
were retained when available.

Lebanese-American poet, essayist, and visual artist Etel Adnan was born in 1925 in Beirut. Adnan received a degree in philosophy
from the Sorbonne and, in 1955, continued her studies at Harvard and the University of California, Berkeley. She taught philosophy
at the Dominican University of California in San Rafael from 1952-1972. In 1972, Adnan moved back to Beirut and worked as
a cultural editor for two daily newspapers. While in Beirut, she met her partner, Simone Fattal. The couple settled in Sausalito,
California in 1977, and Fattal founded the Post Apollo Press there in 1982. Post Apollo focused on poetry and experimental
writing, and published many of Adnan's books. Adnan and Fattal moved to Paris in 2012.
