Abstract:
Letters written to various family members and mutual friends by Towl and/or Van Dusen, who are working their way to Calif.
to work in the gold mines. Consists of photocopies of typed transcripts for letters from 1855-1859, covering a stop in Omaha
City, and their stay in Calif. Also includes photocopies of all 12 original manuscript letters from 1855-1895, and including
letters from 1866-1882, which are written by Van Dusen only. One letter from 1866, is from Mont. Terr., followed by 2 letters,
1881-1882, from Gold Hill, Nev. Of the remaining letters, all written to Van Dusen's sister, Mrs. Christie Findlay of Lowell,
Mich., 2 are written by Sara C. Grier of Silver City, Nev.: one on his behalf in 1893, and the other reporting Van Dusen's
death in 1895; the last 2 letters are from Manasses Boyle, Superintendent of the Alta Silver Mining Company, and Sister Rose
of St. Mary's Hospital in Virginia City, where Van Dusen died.
Also contains a photocopy of a newspaper article from the Las Vegas review-journal (July 17, 1988) by Mike Little and Douglas
McDonald, relating to Arthur Van Dusen and his role in the rescue of several miners from the Alta mine disaster of 1882.
