Collection consists of transcripts of 10 taped interviews with Vietnamese refugees, conducted Jan.-Aug. 1977, by Eleanor Swent in connection with her work teaching English as a second language. Biography of interviewer, description of project and participants and photocopy of her article about refugees in California living, Aug. 1977, also included. Collection also includes dozens of other transcripts and audio recordings of interviews with Vietnamese refugees conducted by Swent after the completion of the original project as well as a few transcripts of interviews conducted with other Asian immigrants, one as part of Swent's Newcomers to the East Bay Oral History Project.

Descriptions of life in Vietnam before fall of Saigon, April 1975; conditions in refugee camps in South Pacific and U.S.; impressions of American culture; difficulties encountered in adjusting to new life; education and re-training in U.S.; employment; traditional religious beliefs and Christianity; relations with sponsors, government and private relief agencies. Vietnamese woman doctor discusses differences in practice of medicine in U.S. and Vietnam.
