Includes views of Folsom Prison and the California State Prison at San Quentin, depicting the grounds and buildings of both
institutions. Folsom views include general grounds, entrance, mess hall, cell house, quarry and a group portrait of the warden
and staff. Other Folsom images depict activities of inmates, many of them Africa-American, including boxing matches, a baseball
game, stage entertainment, a wheelbarrow race and a sack race. San Quentin views include general grounds, entrance, cell block
building, hospital ward, jute mill and a garden. Collection also includes a portrait of an unidenitified man, and a few slides
containing titles and captions of the play The Incorrigible, by Morrell and Matie W. Loraine.

Edward H. Morrell (October 22, 1868-November 10, 1946): born Thomaston, Pennsylvania; came to California 1891; accomplice
to Evans and Sontag gang that repeatedly robbed Southern Pacific Railroad trains in the San Joaquin Valley during the 1890s;
sentenced to life imprisonment at Folsom in 1894; transferred to San Quentin by 1899, where he spent 5 years in solitary confinement;
pardoned 1908; befriended Jack London, who based a character on Morrell in his novel Star Rover; lectured widely to advocate
prison reform; with Matie W. Loraine wrote play The Incorrigible, in 1914; published memoirs, The 25th Man: The Strange Story
of Ed. Morrell, the Hero of Jack London's Star Rover, in 1925.
