David Francis Dodge (August 18, 1910-August 8, 1974) was an American author of mystery/thriller novels and humorous travel
books. Dodge was born in Berkeley, California, the youngest child of George Andrew Dodge, a San Francisco architect, and Maude
Ellingwood Bennett Dodge. On July 17, 1936, he was married to Elva Keith (July 17, 1936-October 17, 1973), a former Macmillan
Company editorial representative, and their only daughter, Kendal, was born in 1940. Dodge's first experience as a writer
came through his involvement with the Macondray Lane Players, a group of amateur playwrights, producers, and actors, founded
by George Henry Burkhardt (Dodge's brother-in-law) that performed exclusively at Macondria, a little theater located at 56
Macondray Lane on San Francisco's Russian Hill. His first book was published in 1941. His fiction is characterized by tight
plotting, brisk dialogue, memorable and well-defined characters, and exotic locations. His travel writing (frequently with
illustations by Irv Koons) documented the (mis)adventures of the Dodge family as they roamed around the world. He also wrote
numerous travel articles for various magazines, appearing as a regular contributor to Holiday Magazine from 1948 to 1968.
Dodge died in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico at the age of 63.
William J.B. (John Blackman) Stokes, known as Jake or Jack, and his wife, Marie Louise, known as Liz or Weedie, Stokes were
friends of the Dodges from Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Jake graduated from Princeton University in 1933 with degree in Physics
and died in Trenton, New Jersey in 1991 of complications from Alzheimers disease. Liz died in 2013 at the age of 98.
