Abstract:
Many photographs of the Alaska Gold Rush are included in this collection, most from Juneau and Dyea. These include Alaskan
harbor scenes; climbers on the Chilkoot summit; a large tent camp in snow with pack animals and climbers visible (at Chilkoot
pass); and town views of early settlement at Dyea showing boats, a hotel, cabins, tents, and other housing, and sled dog teams.
Other parts of the collection include views of Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley, the Carmel mission, Utah, and Pike's Peak,
Colorado. Other Southern California views include Yuma and Mohave Native American portraits. Photographs of the John Marsh
Rancho form part of the Mt. Diablo pictorial project and include 1938 views of buildings, scenery, adobe ruins, and Marsh's
residence (all well captioned). Other photographs include portraits of Pasadena high school friends, snapshopts of Charles
Camp, views of the Camps' summer home on the Yuba River, and photographs for the Doble journal (photos of illustrations having
to do with mining, etc.) Some copy prints of early daguerreotypes of mining and early settlement in Murphy's, Calif. are also
included. Collection includes some original magazine pages from Peterson's Magazine and the Ladies Repository from 1868 and
1874.
