Abstract:

Consists mainly of diaries and letters written by Hammond while travelling in Europe (especially Spain) and Mexico with her husband, George. The diaries cover several trips over a period of 45 years and contain detailed entries of daily activities, as well as those regarding George's research.
Also contains biographical information of Hammond and genealogical material on her family (Nielson or Nelson), as well as the families of her two cousins, Elsie Jensen Davis and Lawrence Petersen. In addition, an interview with Hammond by her great-grandson, Darren Hammond, as a school project is included.

Carrie Nelson Hammond was born on Jan. 23, 1900 in Ogden, Utah, and grew up in the Fresno, Calif., area. In 1921, she married George Hammond, who was later director of The Bancroft Library. They travelled extensively throughout Europe and Mexico, mostly due to his research, and she maintained diaries of these travels. She died on Jan. 27, 1996.
