Chiefly California and desert Southwest landscapes in a pictorialist style. Also includes Yosemite views, mountain landscapes in the Sierra Nevada and elsewhere, studies of rock forms, architectural details, and views at the Golden Gate International Exhibition of 1939.

Chiefly gelatin silver prints, with some bromide prints.

An active San Francisco photographer, Baumgaertel participated extensively in Camera Club exhibitions across the United States and internationally. He was a director in the Associated Camera Clubs of America and was Pacific Coast Executive of the Pictorial Photographers of America. He was also a charter member of the Photographic Society of America. He died in 1958.
