Abstract:
Correspondence of George Bartholomew, his son, Harry, and Harry's friend, Dan Headley, from various Calif. locations and Bristol,
Conn. Also includes letters from Angeline Bartholomew, Adna Whiting, and H.H. Porter. The 24 letters discuss local news, work
in the gold fields, and health, business, and financial matters, with numerous remarks concerning the work habits of the Irish.
Letter of 1852 June 26 from Harry to John Sessions describes his journey from Conn. to Calif. via the Isthmus of Panama, and
of 1853 Nov. 13 comments on the construction methods used by Chinese laborers in San Francisco. In addition, an unidentified
letter of 1857 March 28 which has no apparent connection to the rest of the collection.

George Bartholomew arrived in San Francisco, Calif. from Bristol, Conn., ca. June 1849, and was joined by his son, Harry in
April 1852. Bartholomew left Calif. to return to Bristol in Sept. 1853, as did Harry in Jan. 1854. There is no date for Dan
Headley's arrival in Calif., and no indication whether he returned to Bristol.
