Alice Sachs Hamburg was born in 1905 in Wilton, South Dakota to Jewish immigrants from Lithuania. She came into the world
at the Wilton Coal Mining Company Hospital. Her parents arrived in North Dakota in 1904 as part of a colony of 50 Jewish families
organized by the Jewish Agricultural Aid Society to settle in north central Burleigh County. Her father farmed and worked
in the coal mine during the winters. Alice moved to California in 1924 to attend Fresno State University and then later the
University of California, Berkeley. She married Sam Hamburg, the noted California agricultural pioneer and political activist,
in 1926. Alice Hamburg became an active California political activist and leader in the women's peace movement. Her activities
included teaching migrant laborer children, co-founding the Citizens' Committee Against the Loyalty Oath, and a life-long
affiliation with the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and Women Strike for Peace.
