Anne Raphael's paternal grandparents were Max and Lena Raphael who emigrated from Russia and arrived in San Francisco in 1889.
Max worked as a tailor, and he also opened a synagogue that was later destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. The couple
had nine sons, and the family lived in San Francisco's McAllister District. Anne's father, Henry Raphael, graduated from the
University of California before he married Anne's mother, Leah Newman. Anne was born in San Francisco in 1919. Starting in
1936, Anne began appearing in plays at San Francisco's Mission High School. By the following year, Anne was acting in productions
in San Francisco, at the Golden Bough Playhouse, on Van Ness Street. Later, Anne married Michael Dolliet (in 1943), and the
couple had a single son, Gregory Sproston.
