Title:
ASARO graphics collection
Creator/Contributor:
ASARO (Group of artists), creator
Abstract:
Series of original prints (woodcuts, lithographs and serigraphs) advocating human rights, social justice and other causes
as they pertain to various contemporary events and situations in Mexico -- e.g. unjust treatment of illegal Mexican immigrants
in the U.S.; the violent government repression of the APPO strike in Oaxaca in 2006; the serial murders of women in Ciudad
Juárez; genetically modified corn; U.S. exploitation of Mexico's oil resources; and Mexican political prisoners. Another
series features contemporary revisions of the image of Emiliano Zapata. Also includes miscellaneous prints issued by ASARO
depicting Benito Juarez, Frida Kahlo and other subject matter, and lower quality ephemeral posters used to promote various
events; many of them affiliated with ASARO's exhibition center Espacio Zapata. Throughout the collection, images include
visual references to police states (e.g. swastikas of Nazi Germany), imperialism, fascism, capitalism, socialism, revolution,
and Mexico's agrarian culture, among other themes. Many images also bear the traditional Mexican motif of the skeleton ("calaveras").
One folder (--PIC) includes self-published booklet: ASARO a 2 años; and a dvd copy of documentary film on ASARO: El Muro.
