Abstract:
Contains four photographs of buildings and grounds of Alcatraz Island when it served as a military prison. Also present are
views of Fort Winfield Scott, a residential building at Fort Mason (Black Point), other views of San Francisco Bay, and cadets
at Union College, New York. Includes many newsclippings, mementos of distinguished visitors, programs, invitations, etc.,
pertaining to the First Artillery from its 1881 arrival in the San Francisco area, as well as ephemera pertaining to various
military matters. Many items refer to officer Henry W. Hubbell, Jr. Also includes page 1 of vol. 1 no. 1 (Nov. 1881) of The
Alcatraz Sentinel ("An occasional journal devoted to the interests of the prisoners"), and a printed sheet with the lyrics
for "Uncle Sammy's pet", for the Alcatraz Variety Troupe. Material on the final pages relates to general military matters
or to Hubbell's assignment to Union College, New York (in late 1883).
