Alfred Métraux was born in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1902. In 1928 he received his Docteur es Lettres from the Sorbonne.
He briefly taught at the University of California, Berkeley in 1938. He joined the staff of the Smithsonian Institute's Bureau
of American Ethnology between 1941 and 1945, and contributed to the Handbook of South American Indians. From 1946 through
1962 Métraux worked for the United Nations, most of that time with UNESCO's Department of Social Justice. He died in April,
1963.
