Ann Cohn was a teacher in San Francisco and other locations in the western United States. Her parents were Joseph Cohn (whose surname was originally Margulin) and Lena Cohn. The family lived in many different locations, including Texas Ridge, Boise, Potlatch, and Prairie, Idaho; Pullman, Spokane, and Tehoah, Washington; and San Francisco, California.
