Contains 142 handwritten letters of correspondence between Alberto Beltrán, a Mexican artist, and Emmanuel C. Montoya, a Mexican
American printmaker living in San Francisco, California. 119 letters are from Beltrán to Montoya; 23 letters are Montoya's
replies to Beltrán, consisting of 22 carbon copies and 1 original. Topics covered include the role of art in politics, illegal
immigration, United States foreign policy, and Mexican, American, and international politics. Also includes numerous newspaper
clippings that were enclosed with many of the letters. Other files include materials concerning special art projects, a 35mm
filmstrip, "Taller de Gráfica Popular," with a photocopy of the accompanying booklet, and some miscellany. Other materials
include photocopies of photographs and articles concerning various other artists including Leopoldo Mendéz and Seymour "Sy"
Kaplan, a Brooklyn, New York artist who studied in Mexico. Includes English abstracts for the correspondence.

Alberto Beltrán García (born March 22, 1923, Mexico City, died April 19, 2002, Mexico City) was one of the most prolific,
versatile and successful graphic artists in Mexico in the 20th century. He worked as an illustrator, cartoonist, designer,
engraver, painter, and muralist. In 1944, he joined the artists' print collective, Taller de Gráfica Popular, and was an active
member until his latter years when health curtailed many of his activities.
Emmanuel C. Montoya, is a professional artist, printmaker and muralist. A longtime resident of the San Francisco Bay Area,
he attended high school and earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degree in printmaking at San Francisco State
Universy. His artwork has been collected and displayed by numerous organizations in the United States including the Supreme
Court of California, the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, and the Library of Congress, among many others. In the
1970s, he was introduced to Alberto Beltrán through correspondence and quickly developed a deep friendship with their shared
belief in the role of artists as activists for social change and a concern for the poor and oppressed.
Taller de Gráfica Popular was an artists' print collective founded in 1937 by Leopoldo Mendez, Pablo O'Higgins, and Luis Arneal.
It was established with the goal of using art to advance revolutionary social causes and to combat Fascism.
