Abstract:

Eleven handwritten letters from a Union army soldier to various family members [likely living in Greeneville (i.e.Norwich) Connecticut]. Two of the letters are from his time of service in an artillery unit during the Civil War and the siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana. The rest of the letters cover a later period of his military career when he served at Camp Logan, Oregon. Many of the later letters contain references to hunting, chasing, and capturing Indians and Army deserters. Also contains typescript transcriptions of each letter.

Andrew Mussel (b. 1844?) from Greeneville, Connecticut, enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 5, 1862 in New York City and was assigned to the 5th Artillery during the Civil War.
Camp Logan, Oregon was established September 2, 1865 by Captain A.B. Ingram, Company K., 1st Oregon Volunteer Infantry and named for Warm Springs Indian Agent, William Logan. Established to protect settlers along the Dalles-Fort Boise Military Road from attacks by hostile Indians, the camp was evacuated on November 28, 1868 and abandoned in January, 1869.
