Title:

African-American family photographs from the East Bay

Creator/Contributor:

Williams, Henry Albert.

Abstract:

Collection shows family life, friends, and activities of one or more African-American families in the East Bay. Identified locations include Oakland, Richmond, San Pablo, San Francisco, etc. Photographs of Barber family members show Charlotte E. Barber as a child in a group school picture from Highland school in Oakland, 1922; Charlotte Barber Smith (Mrs. DeWitt Smith) and Georgietta Yebby Woods in costume as performers in the Oakland performing duo, the Blackbirds of Rhythm; group portraits of football teams and other (school?) groups taken in Denver, Colorado which include Willis Barber; a photo clipped from a newspaper showing a football player in uniform (probably Willis Barber); two people posed by a gravestone reading "C.H. Barber -- Frankie Barber 1861-19[?]; etc. The album with Barber family items in it also contains a photograph of a nurse identified as Matilda Moore of Highland Hospital, and many photos of outings, local scenery, family events, children, homes, formal dress, etc.
Photographs possibly not related to the Barber family show snapshots at the Panama Pacific International Exposition, a postcard of the Luther M. Hudson Funeral Home at 953 8th St. in Oakland, military men in uniform, a group of people at a restaurant captioned "L.B. Woods", some studio portraits, and a program for Reverend David James' funeral in 1955 (Fort Worth, Tx.). Letters were found in both the Barber family items and the other items from Henry Albert Williams (signed, H.A. Williams, Evangelist) resident of San Pablo, Calif., previously of Panola County, Texas.
