Abstract:
Contains original journal (107 p.) of Aaron D. Riker's overland journey in 1852 from Champaign County, Ohio to California
during the gold rush, his time in California, and his return home the next year via Nicaragua, Also contains color photocopy
of Riker's Civil War diary, which describes experiences with his Ohio regiment in such places as Winchester, Front Royal,
Fredericksburg, Culpepper, Harper's Ferry, Leesburg, and Fairfax; also describes marching on Atlanta with General Sherman
and portrays the burning of Atlanta. Collection includes photocopies of typescript and handwritten transcriptions of both
journals and a dissertation by John Page Hoover, "The Journal of Aaron D. Riker" (1932) for Stanford University. Also includes
photocopy of printed version of the journal of his brother John F. Riker, documenting the same trip titled "Journal of a trip
to California by the Overland Route," typescript transcriptions of correspondence between John F. Riker and his future wife
Eliza Lichliter, an article on the history of St. Paris, Ohio, biographical information prepared by Nancy J. Henderson and
Riker/Snapp family genealogical information.
