The Adelphi Company was an association of 8 men from New York City who incorporated themselves into a joint stock company
to travel to California to mine gold. The company was directed by Charles Ellet and included Edmund G. Capron, Joseph M. Frey,
Charles C. Green, John G. Hyer, Josiah Hoyt, Charles G. Judah, and Clarence G. Mitchell. Stockholders included John W. Mitchell
(Clarence Mitchell's father), Green, Hyer, Mitchell, and Robert R. Hunter. The company sailed for California on February 17,
1849 on the S.S. Panama; the Utica Company, a 10-member mining company, traveled on the same ship.
