Gift, 1991.
The Portola Festival of 1909 marked the 140th anniversary of the discovery of San Francisco Bay by Gaspar de Portola, who became the first governor of California. Portola Festival also celebrated San Francisco's recovery from the disastrous 1906 Earthquake and Fire. Nicholas A. Covarrubias was chosen to impersonate Gaspar de Portola for the festivities and Vergilia Bogue was selected to be his accompanying queen. One of the 18 prints is marked Pillsbury Picture Co. Otherwise, the photographer is unknown.
