Note:

While the date of Stephen Davis' death is given in his published journal as October 4, 1856, two letters in this collection that are addressed to him appear to date from 1858.
Stephen Davis was born near Dunstable, Massachusetts on February 16, 1833. After his father's death in 1844 Stephen moved with his mother and siblings to Nashua, New Hampshire, where he worked in a variety of jobs before and after his mother's remarriage to Joseph L. Doty in 1848. Stephen subsequently went to sea as a cabin boy, and traveled to California with his brother Josiah at the height of the Gold Rush in 1848. Arriving back home by Thanksgiving of 1851, he returned to California two months later, where his stepfather had gone. During his two stays in California Stephen sold goods and supplies, operated a store in Coulterville, and kept company with other men from Nashua. He returned home in 1854, then went to England and made money selling apples. Davis died, probably of tuberculosis, at about the age of 23.
