Kay Frances Holst was born on July 29, 1934, in Moline, Illinois. She attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois,
pursuing a liberal arts education. In 1955 she married John M. Anderson and, in 1958, his Marine Corps posting led them to
San Mateo, California, with their one-year-old daughter, Susan Kay. Their second child, Kathryn Jane, was born in 1959.
In California Kay began her free-lance writing career and became a motivational speaker/educator -- two life-long commitments.
She completed her education, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in Psychology from San Francisco State University in 1978,
and an M.A. in Education/Psychology in 1980 and was also certified as a Transactional Analyst with the International T. A.
Association. Publications during this period include 'The First book of philosophy' for gifted 6th grade students and 'I and
thou in the here and now' which was named Word Books, Inc. Book of the Month.
Kay discovered the haiku path in 1990 and has developed expertise in all the haiku forms. She has published extensively in
the major haiku journals and has been included in many anthologies, including William J. Higginson's 'Haiku world'. Her awards
include a 1st in the Haiku Poets of Northern California International Tanka Contest in 1995; in 1996 she was awarded 2nd in
the Harold Henderson Haiku contest and in the National League of American Pen Women contest. That same year she served as
President of the Haiku Poets of Northern California. Kay was twice featured as an honored reader at the HPNC 'Two Autumns'
readings in San Francisco, in 1993 and again in 2002.
Kay served as a judge for the 1994 Gerald M. Brady Memorial Senryu International Contest sponsored by the Haiku Society of
America and for the International Haiku Contest sponsored by the Palomar Branch of the National League of American Pen Women
in 2001. In 1997, she established the Kayfa Roshi Award for Life-Changing Action in Support of Youth which she has continued
to confer each year.
Kay has also developed her artistic talent as an illustrator. Her sumi-e first appeared in 'Woodnotes' and was featured in
Linda Ward's 'Full moon tide'. Kay's work also illustrated David Rice's 'Light on the mountain'. A sampling of Kay's haiga

Kay and her husband John are now living Redwood City, California. Their daughters are nearby -- Kathryn Anderson is a Detective
Sergeant of the Redwood City Police Department and Sue Villarreal is a high school fine arts and English teacher/counselor
in Mount Shasta. Kay and John have four grandchildren, Megan, Vincent, J.R. and Laura. Kay recently recovered from cancer
and her use of haiku in work with other cancer patients was featured, along with her haiku, in Emiko Miyashita's 'The New
pond'. Kay hopes to soon resume the work she began some years ago on a book to help a new population to find and travel the
'Haiku Path to Joy'.
