Note:

Paradise Camp No. 145 of the United Spanish War Veterans was founded on Oct. 19, 1940 in Paradise, California. On that date the members voted to establish a women's auxiliary, designated Auxiliary No. 127. The installation of officers for both groups took place on Dec. 21, with guests present from local USWV groups in Marysville, Oroville, Chico and Oakland.
The national USWV organization had been founded in 1904 for the purpose of ensuring the rights of veterans who served during the 1898 conflict and to promote charitable and social activities within the local community. The primary focus of all USWV groups during the early 1940s was to lobby Congress on behalf of H.R. 2350, legislation granting benefits to widows and dependents of Spanish American War veterans. Members were urged to "Write to your congressman at once urging him or her to support that bill. Tell them when we entered the service of our Country a definite promise was made that we would receive pension rights under the same policy and in like manner as were granted to the veterans of the Civil War and their dependents. This bill does that."
During this period, the Paradise organizations were also active in charitable activities such as supplying books on the Spanish American War to local libraries, making Memorial Day wreaths and fundraising for the needy. At the national level, the Paradise organizations participated in a drive to restore the Olympia, Admiral Dewey's flagship during the Battle of Manila Bay; and, during World War II, the Camp purchased war bonds and the Auxiliary worked with the Red Cross. Throughout the years, the members of Paradise USWV socialized frequently with other USWV groups in Northern California, attending dances, picnics and Christmas banquets.
During the 1960s and 1970s membership declined as many veterans died. USWV Paradise Camp No. 145 and Auxiliary No. 127 were last listed in the Paradise city directory in 1978.
