Gold was discovered in the Meadow Lake vicinity in 1863. Two years later a belated rush began. Meadow Lake Mill and Mining
Co. was engaged in a variety of activities ranging from mining interests and the operation of sawmills to the organization
of the Meadow Lake Turnpike Company which built and maintained a toll road.
