Oil leases -- United States
Orange County (Calif.)

Note:

In 1899, the San Joaquin Gun Club, who had previously leased property from the Irvine Ranch, purchased marshland known as Bolsa Chica Beach between Seal Beach and Huntington Beach in Orange County. The club membership incorporated as both the Bolsa Gun Club and the Bolsa Land Company, gun club members each owning one share in the land company. In 1920 oil was discovered on this property, which was leased to Standard Oil Company for a period of twenty years, and to Signal Oil Company and others thereafter. In 1941 the Bolsa Land Company was dissolved, with the tenants owning the property in common. By 1963 the surface of the property had been conveyed to six new corporations, with subsurface rights still held by the tenants-in-common. Eventually the surface rights to this property were acquired by the State of California for a state beach.
