Note:

Frank G. Edwards, born 1822 in Oxford, England came to San Francisco by the clipper ship "Eureka," in 1852. By 1858, he had established his carpet business. He was a member of the Vigilance Committee of 1856 and was associated with the San Francisco Fire Department from 1853 to 1900, becoming President of the Board of Fire Commissioners, 1879-1900. His business grew and by the 1880's, he occupied 3 floors of the Starr King building where his store was described as "spacious and magnificent." However, in 1890, he was declared "insolvent" in an article in the SF Call (6/27/1890) entitled "a pioneer gone under." He had assets of $13,000 against liabilities of $25,000. Receipts for purchases for his business (the Pioneer Carpet House) exist till 1889, but not for 1890. Edwards was in debt to merchants in Philadelphia, but he was back in the publishing business (Edwards Publishing Company) in 1891. He was President of the Edwards Publishing Company till his death in 1900. He was succeeded by his son F. Ernest Edwards and the business continued till 1906, when receipts end.
