Title:
Skaidrite Rubene-Herbert A. Lattes correspondence, 1974-1993
Creator/Contributor:
Rubene, Skaidrite, creator, creator.
Creator/Contributor:
Lattes, Herbert A., correspondent.
Abstract:
Approximately 2,000 letters between Skaidrite Rubene and Herbert A. Lattes. The letters from Lattes are originals that Rubene
saved; she made photocopies of her letters to him. Rubene was a Latvian expatriate, and a librarian at UC Berkeley. She met
Bert Lattes on a train in Italy (he lived in Florence) in 1974 and the two corresponded until his death in 1983. Their friendship
was entirely epistolary and platonic; they wrote intimately about love, sex, philosophy, art, politics and economics, literature,
theater, dance, their work, young people, and the celebrities Lattes knew. There is also a small amount of correspondence
between Rubene and her daughter Christine Koo and between Rubene and Elie Lattes, Bert's sister, and an article about their
friendship and correspondence by Rubene's friend, San Francisco writer Dan Harder called "Love Letters."
