Abstract:
Chiefly graphic material related to Nash's fine press productions. Includes original ink, pencil & watercolor drawings for
borders, vignettes, illustrations, frontispiece portraits, monograms, initial letters and bookplates, plus various etchings
and stats. Also present are offset prints from the Golden Gate International Exposition, 1939-1940; a photograph of the Nash
exhibit at the International Book Fair, Cologne, 1926; various photos and prints related to Nash: his birthday party at the
Bohemian Grove, 1938; at the family farm; a caricature of him at the Vatican Library; his home in Berkeley, Calif.; as a young
man at the Tomoyé Press; and receiving L.L.D. from the University of Oregon. Includes several portraits of Nash's friends
and associates, including architect Mark Daniels and the endocrinologist Herbert M. Evans. Also present is a portrait of Pope
Pius XI and an indulgence signed by him, framed in a presentation case.

John Henry Nash portrait collection cataloged separately (BANC PIC 1944.003)
John Henry Nash, 1871-1947, Canadian-born typographer, came to San Francisco in 1895, and became associated with the Tomoyé
Press. He later joined the printing firm of Taylor & Taylor (1911-1915) before founding his own press for fine printing in
1916. His publications varied from Dante's The Divine Comedy to writings by local authors, all done in a grandiose style.
In 1936 Nash and his library became affiliated with the University of Oregon.
