Abstract:
Beilenson discusses his family background and childhood, attending Harvard University, moving to California in 1957, joining
the Beverly Hills Democratic Club and winning the Club's endorsement to run for the 59th Assembly District in 1962. He continues
with the impact of 1965 Reapportionment Act in campaigning for public office in 1966, working with Gov. Ronald Reagan to formulate
1971 Welfare Reform Act, working with Gov. Jerry Brown, becoming chair of the Finance Committee in 1975, and deciding to run
for the House of Representatives in 1976. Major topics include authoring Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area legislation,
Sepulveda Basin park project, working with people affected by the 1994 Northridge earthquake, campaign finance reform, and
partisan politics.

Anthony C. Beilenson was born in New Rochelle, NY, on Oct. 16, 1932. From 1963-1966, Beilenson represented the 59th Assembly
District. He went on to serve as a state senator of the 26th District from 1967-1976. While in the state legislature, he authored
over 200 state laws, including the Therapetuic Abortion Act of 1967, the Welfare Reform Act of 1971, and the Auto Repair Fraud
Act of 1971. In 1976, Beilenson won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for the 23rd District. During his last 2 terms,
from 1992-1996, he represented the 24th District. While in Congress, he chaired the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence
in 1989 and 1990. He also served on the Rules Committee and the House Budget Committee, as well as the Congressional Task
Force on Immigration Reform. Accomplishments include authoring legislation creating the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation
Area and the Elephant Conservation Act of 1988.
