Note:
Francis Brett Hart was born in Albany, New York on August 25, 1836. He moved to California in 1853, by which time he had begun
writing and had changed the spelling of his last name. His first literary efforts appeared in "The Californian," and in 1868
he became editor of the new "Overland Monthly." In 1878, after his popularity had waned, he was appointed United States Consul
in Krefield, Germany, to the same position in Glasgow, Scotland in 1880, and five years later settled in London. Harte continued
writing until his death in Camberley, England on May 6, 1902.
Charles Warren Stoddard was born in Rochester, New York on August 7, 1843. His family moved to New York a few years later,
and to San Francisco in 1855. During the 1860s he made several trips to the South Seas, writing about his impressions, and
during the 1870s served as a traveling correspondent for the "San Francisco Chronicle." Settling later in Washington, DC and
in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Stoddard continued writing until his death in Monterey, California on April 23, 1909.
