Note:
Gertrude Franklin Horn was born on October 30, 1857 in San Francisco, daughter of Thomas L. Horn and Gertrude Franklin. Her
parents separated two years later. In 1876 Gertrude eloped with George H. Bowen Atherton, the son of a wealthy merchant, and
lived with her mother in law on the family estate. During this period Gertrude began writing under pseudonyms, since society
took a dim view of women writers. Following her husband's death in 1887, Gertrude continued writing and moved to England,
where her work met with acclaim. She moved back to San Francisco by 1932 and died there in 1948. Many of her novels deal with
historical themes, and some are set in California.
