Scope and Contents

This collection consists of radio broadcast and special effects recordings from the Standard School Broadcast radio program. Produced by the Standard Oil Company of California, the program was geared for educational use with focus on music appreciation and American history. The examples found within the collection are sourced from the offices of Standard Oil in San Francisco.

Biographical / Historical

The Standard School Broadcast was founded in 1928 with the intent to promote music appreciation and American history for young students on the Pacific Coast of the United States. The program's sponsor, Standard Oil of California, partnered with the NBC Pacific Coast Network to carry the broadcast over the air waves until the 1950s. The Standard School Broadcast afterwards moved into syndication receiving in 1975 the Peabody Institutional Award for excellence in continuous educational radio programming.

Arrangement

This series is arranged loosely by the annual broadcast seasons as indicated on the individual tapes. The exception to this arrangement is a sub-series of special effects tapes used as source material for the Standard Oil production team and in some cases are undated.
