The Conference of California Historical Societies contains records and
correspondence related to its founding, early years, membership, the
publication of the California Historian, and the
organization of annual conferences.
Background
The Conference of California Historical Societies is a consortium of the
local historical societies of California. The Conference was founded under the
leadership of California History Professor R. Coke Wood of the College of the
Pacific (1954). The Conference supports the activities of its members with
educational programs and information on historic restoration, fund raising,
grant writing, lobbying, collection maintenance, volunteer activities and other
subjects of interest to membership. The Conference publishes the
California Historian and hosts annual conferences
and workshops.
