Series 1 comprises minutes of San Francisco Local 21, 1906-1996, San Mateo Local 624, 1925-1933, Northern California Typographical Conference, 1960-1972, and minutes of California-Nevada Typographical and Mailers' Conference, 1974. Minutes prior to 1906 were destroyed in fires caused by the earthquake. Beginning in 1916, the BATU Local 21 meeting minutes were bound.

Scope and Contents

Series 2, History, documents the history of Local 21. The series contains a written history by member Phillip Johnson encompassing the period between 1850 and 1940 and miscellaneous papers used to prepare the Johnson history; the history of San Francisco Local 21 written by Crawford (?) from 1851-1884 with newspaper clippings circa 1917; a historical collection collected by First Vice-President Morris Goldman, which includes a 1842 typographical union card from Britain; and ephemera on union activities from 1880s to early 1900s.

Series 3, Administrative Files, contains a broken set of the constitution and by-laws of Local 21 (1869-1939), constitution and by-laws for Local 36, (1962, 1965), Local 389, (1959), Local 624, (1951-1953), as well as those of the Allied Printing Trades Council (1974), and the Northern California Typographical Conference, 1965. The bulk of the series contains Local 21 files documenting the circumstances around the 1963-1964 commercial strike including strike notices, arbitration hearings, hearing exhibits and consumer campaign files, records of strikes against the San Francisco Newspaper Publishers' Association, 1968, San Rafael Independent Journal, 1970, and the Vallejo Times-Herald, (1978-1984). Also contains correspondence and pension files of locals 21, 36 and 521 and election materials of Local 21.

Scope and Contents

Series 14, President’s Records, documents the activities of Local 21 during the sixties and through the nineties, before Local 21 merged with the Pacific Media Workers Guild (1998). Materials are largely textual, comprising arbitration files and grievance reports, contract drafts and proposals, tentative and final agreements, clippings, shop correspondence, and financial reports. The bulk of the series consists of records produced between 1990 and 2001 when the BATU was under the leadership of Charles Tobias, President, and is organized by company and event.
The largest subseries, Contract Administration, contains contracts and processes/notes and proposals for collective bargaining for various employers, including San Jose Mercury News, Oakland Tribune, San Rafael Independent Journal, Sorg, Peninsula News Paper Inc., San Mateo Times, San Francisco Newspaper Agency (SFNA), Press Democrat, Peninsula Times Tribune, and the Petaluma Argus. Of particular interest is the documentation of the San Rafael Independent Journal Strike (1970s), which includes arbitration files, public relations materials, correspondence, newspaper clippings, advertising boycott campaigns, and clippings documenting the tragic murder of San Rafael Independent Journal executive Allan W. Daly.

The ITU became an autonomous sector within Communication Workers of America, called the Printing, Publishing and Media Workers Sector. Subseries also contains records documenting the BATU Local 21 merger with and Northern California Newspaper Group, Local 52 (formally called the Newspaper Group, Local 52), in 1997.
