The Department of Special Collections received the Displaced Homemakers Center
Archives in 1994, several years after the center's direct services were transferred to
Peralta Community College.
Access

Scope And Content
The Displaced Homemakers Center Archives contains material relating to the
organization, function, and administration of the Oakland, California center. Types of
materials include correspondence, office files, and subject files.
The archives from the center, the first of its kind in the United States, trace its
development from conception through several years of operation. As a whole, the files
offer a unique view of early efforts for the recognition of the employment needs of older
women. Personal letters from around the country clearly demonstrate the need for the
services that the Oakland center provided. Office files illustrate the organization and
daily function of the center, while subject files show what issues were of utmost concern
to the center and its clients.
The collection covers the period from 1976 to 1981 when center services and
administration were located on the Mills College Campus. Materials from the period
after the transfer of direct services to Peralta Community College are lacking.
