Abstract: The Crystal Ice Manufacturing Company began as the Whittier Ice and Cold Storage Company in 1914 by C. Caldwell and delivered
ice to homes in Southern California. The collection contains ledgers, legal documents, sales forms, receipts, and a time book
related to the operations of the Crystal Ice Manufacturing Company.

Biography
The Crystal Ice Manufacturing Company began as the Whittier Ice and Cold Storage Company in 1914 by C. Caldwell; the company
used horses and wagons to deliver ice to homes in Southern California; L.O. Montegomery purchased the company in 1915; as
the business grew, trucks replaced the horses to expedite service; in 1928, all ice was sold to homes, cafes, and butcher
shops, but by 1930 business expanded to provide ice for railroad cars carrying citrus fruits; in February 1938, Philip L.
Gabriel purchased the company, built a seasonal ice storage building, and the name changed to the Crystal Ice Company of Whittier;
in 1941 the company expanded to include its Fullerton site, and a second food locker plant was also built.
Scope and Content
Collection contains ledgers, legal documents, sales forms, receipts, and a time book related to the operations of the Crystal
Ice Manufacturing Company in Whittier, California. Ledgers contain ice production information, 1915-38. Also includes materials
related to the National Association of Ice Industries and the California Association of Ice Industries, including copies of
several presentations and research reports about the ice industry and the storage of vegetables.
