Scope and Content

The Philosophical Union was established by George Holmes Howison as a society for the discussion of philosophical questions. The society included not only faculty of the University of California, but also interested ministers and laymen. Many of the best known philosophers of the day came to speak before the Philosophical Union, including William James.

The papers consist of correspondence, constitution of the organization and minutes of meetings, and papers delivered at the meetings, although not every paper delivered is represented in the collection.
