Biography
The following is a brief biographical sketch of the Gulick family members depicted in or associated with the collection. The
biography's organization roughly mirrors the arrangement of the photographs in the container list.
Quinn and Jessie Gulick, the primary collectors of these photographs, were the son and daughter-in-law of James Harvey Gulick
and Laura Palmer Gulick. The donor, George Gulick, was the son of Quinn and Jessie Gulick.
James and Laura Gulick migrated from Kansas in 1887. The first branch of the Gulick family to come to California, they first
lived in Newport Beach, then moved to Villa Park and Olive where they purchased a ranch. In later years, when all the children
had left home, James and Laura Gulick sold the ranch in Olive and moved to Santa Ana.
James Gulick was the only son of Martin and Annis Gulick. Martin and Annis Gulick resided in Plainview, Illinois, and they
later followed James to California, living on First Street in Tustin. They had four children: Olive and Hattie Gulick (who
resided at home), Alice Gulick Gooch and Sadie Gulick Humiston. Mary Jane Gulick Phelps, James Harvey Gulick and Eleanor (Nell)
Gulick Davidson were their three stepchildren.
Eleanor Gulick married Colin Davidson and also migrated to California, residing in Tustin, Trabuco Canyon, Pomona and Hemet.
The Davidson children were Sue (married John Willson), Laura (married Ivo Palmer), Elizabeth (Lelia), Harry (died in teens),
and Annis (died in teens).
Alice Gulick married John Gooch and migrated from Plainview, Illinois with Martin and Annis Gulick. The Gooches eventually
settled in National City, where John Gooch was an exterminator contractor. Florence Gooch, their only child, died at the age
of seven.
Sadie Gulick married Arthur Humiston from Aurora, Illinois. They were the last Gulicks to move to California.
Helen Gulick, daughter of James and Laura Gulick, married William M. Huntley, who became the first mayor of Tustin. Annie
Trickey was William Huntley's stepsister.
Reverend Harlan P. Carson, a cousin of the Gulicks on the Welch side of the family, resided in Scotland, South Dakota. He
was Superintendent of Home Missions, Synod of South Dakota, and later Financial Secretary of Huron College from 1909. One
of his children, Bessie, married a fellow missionary, William M. Barrett, whom she met while serving in Korea.
Collection Scope and Content Summary
The collection consists of 383 photographs relating to the Gulick family of Orange County, California. A family album contains
214 photographs. Images are mostly of the Gulick family branches, extended relatives, and family friends. Other photographs
depict family homes and properties and other locales in Orange County, California and elsewhere in the United States. Items
date from circa 1895 to 1967; the majority are from 1895 to 1921. Formats include albumen and silver gelatin prints and one
tintype.
The collection is organized in three series based on the primary families or other subjects depicted in the photographs. Within
each series, people and places depicted are listed in alphabetical order under the various groupings of family branches and
general locations. The lists do not have a one-to-one correspondence with the photographs. For example, a person may appear
in numerous photographs within the album, but the name is listed only once. Known dates are given, but undated photographs
may also exist in the same series or grouping of photographs.
Separation Note
GAR Official Roster (Santa Ana, California, 1932) transferred to Orange County pamphlet collection.
Related Collections
James Gulick was the half brother of Alice Gulick Gooch, the photographer of a small collection of Orange County photographs
also held by Special Collections. The Gulick collection also adds background to the Huntley Family Collection. The Edna Phelps
Collection contains photographs, family history, and correspondence on the Gulicks.
