Acquisition Information
The Calder-Hayes Family Papers were given to The Bancroft Library by Margaret Calder Hayes on November 17, 1986. Additions
were made in December 1986, February 1987, and December 1987.
Portions of the 1987 additions, consisting of Alexander Calder letters written to his parents, Alexander Stirling Calder
and Nanette Lederer Calder, and his wife, Louisa James Calder, along with selected other family correspondence, drawings,
and photographs have been forwarded to The Alexander Calder Catalogue Raisonné at The Alexander & Louisa Calder Foundation,
34 Tinker Street, Woodstock, New York, 12495.
Scope and Content
The Calder-Hayes Family Papers, 1907-1985, includes correspondence of Alexander Calder (1898-1976) and other members of the
Calder family, along with a few Alexander Calder drawings and ephemera. The bulk of the collection consists of files kept
by Margaret Calder Hayes concerning political, environmental, and humanitarian issues.
The collection contains over 125 original autograph letters, including some which are illustrated, signed by Alexander Calder,
chiefly written to his sister, Margaret (Peggy), and her husband, Kenneth Hayes. These letters date from the outset of Calder's
career and provide many intimate details of the artist's art and family life. They were probably gathered together for Margaret
Calder Hayes' book,
Three Alexander Calders: a Family Memoir, published in 1977. Also includes a few letters written to Peggy and her family by other immediate family members, including
parents, Alexander Stirling Calder and Nanette Lederer Calder, and Alexander's wife, Louisa James Calder, among others. In
addition, there are a few original Calder drawings and sketches.
The Margaret Calder Hayes papers consist of correspondence and subject files relating to her political, environmental, and
humanitarian activities, primarily in Berkeley, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Lake Tahoe, California. Includes extensive
correspondence about local, state, and national issues with political figures, including California Governors Edmund F. Brown
and Ronald Reagan, Senators Alan Cranston, John Tunney, Hubert H. Humphrey, Jacob Javits, and Eugene McCarthy, along with
other individuals.
