Scope and Content
The collection consists primarily of official letters and documents, most of them belonging to the decade
of the 1840s. Many of these are official reports of important events in California, written by various
government officials to Manuel Castro while he was prefect of the Monterey district. Included also are
military papers; election records; land papers; documents relating to the missions; copies, in French
and Spanish, of the contract between John Sutter and Petr Kostromitinov, the latter acting as agent for
the Russian American Company, for the purchase by Sutter of the Russian establishments at Ross and
Bodega in 1841; a small file of letters to and from Thomas Ap Catesby Jones relative to claims of
American citizens against the government of California; and papers dealing with an alleged assault upon
Nathan Spear, a merchant, and Elliott Libbey, captain of the
Tasso, in
1845. A few items pertain to discovery of quicksilver near San José and to salt mines in
Lower California. A number of letters refer to John Sutter and John C. Frémont, the American
immigration into California and the attendant problems, and the uprising at Sonoma in 1846.
After the documents were given to H. H. Bancroft, they were bound, in rough chronological order, and the
items and/or pages numbered. The volumes have been disbound, but the collection has been kept, for the
most part, in the order in which it was originally bound, and the numbers have been retained for
descriptive purposes. The calendar which follows describes each document, or related file of documents.
The alphabetical index which follows the calendar lists the authors and/or signers of the documents with
citations to document numbers.
Biographical Sketch
Manuel Castro, who presented this collection to H. H. Bancroft in 1875, was a member of a very well-known
California family. He was born in 1821, the son of José Simeón Castro and
María Antonia Pico Castro. Pío Pico was his uncle, José Castro his
cousin. His career began about 1839, and for more than a dozen years he was very active in government
and military affairs. After the revolt against Governor Micheltorena, in which Castro was prominent, he
became prefect of the Monterey district, a position of considerable authority and responsibility. He
took part in the difficulties with Frémont and in the Flores revolt, and in 1847 went to
Mexico with Flores. For some years he was in the military service there, acting for a time as head of
the military colony at Santo Tomás in Lower California. After 1852 Castro lived for the most
part in San Francisco, although he remained a Mexican citizen.
