    Biographical Sketch

    Frederick Slate, physicist, the University of California at Berkeley, was born in London, England, on January 21, 1852. He obtained his degree from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1871, was instructor of chemistry from 1874 to 1877, and studied at Berlin and Strasbourg from 1877 to 1879. He came to the University of California where he taught physics from 1891 to 1918, and was the author of several books on physics.

    Scope and Content

    These papers, given to The Bancroft Library from the Slate estate, via the Gift Division of the Main Library, in May, June and July 1966, contain letters, diaries, drafts of articles and speeches, diplomas and photographs. Some papers pertaining to property in Berkeley and to the settlement of his estate are included, as are some family papers from 1847 to 1879.
