History

Mono County was created in 1861. The impetus for its creation came from the gold and silver mines in the 1860's, largely centered in Bodie. From 1861 to 1864, the county seat was Aurora, which was discovered in 1864 to be in Nevada. The county seat was then moved to Bidgeport. Mining continued on a large scale until about 1911 and on a small scale thereafter.
