Scope and Contents
Journal, annotated sketch, photograph, silhouette, biography from book, and juvenalia. The journal is one kept by Kane during
the Second Grinnell Expedition, the purpose of which was to search for Sir John Franklin. The handwritten journal dates from
June 4, 1854 to May 15, 1855 and is in two sections.
Biographical / Historical
Arctic explorer, surgeon, naval officer, and author. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; educated at the Universities of Virginia
and Pennsylvania. He received his doctor of medicine in 1843. Kane travelled abroad extensively, explored the Arctic, and
was a member of the Second Grinnell Expedition to the Arctic, 1854-1855. He died in Havana 16 Feburary 1857.
