    Abstract: Wesley Southmayd Griswold (1909- ) was a feature writer and editor for the Hartford Courant (1930-41), a publicist for the Travelers Insurance Company (1941-42), a copy editor for the The New Yorker (1946-51)) and a copy editor (1945-46) and West Coast editor (beginning in 1951) for the Popular Science Monthly. The collection consists of manuscripts, galley proofs, page proofs, research notes, correspondence, photocopies, printed articles, microfilm, and photographs Griswold's book, A Work of Giants, a history of the American transcontinental railroad, and for a history of Panama railroads.

    Biography

    Wesley Southmayd Griswold was born November 3, 1909 in Middletown, Connecticut; BA, University of North Carolina, 1929; feature writer and editor, Hartford Courant, 1930-41; publicist, Travelers Insurance Company, 1941-42; copy editor, The New Yorker, 1946-51; copy editor (1945-46) and West Coast editor (beginning in 1951), Popular Science Monthly; his book, A Work of Giants (1962), is a history of the American transcontinental railroad.

    Collection consists of manuscripts, galley proofs, page proofs, research notes, correspondence, photocopies, printed articles, microfilm, and photographs for Wesley S. Griswold's book, A Work of Giants (1962) and for a history of Panama railroads. Also includes scrapbooks containing articles by Griswold, reviews of A Work of Giants, and miscellaneous manuscripts, publications, and research materials.
