    Historical Note

    The 4th Illinois Cavalry Regiment was mustered into United States Military service on September 26th, 1861 in Ottawa, LaSalle County Illinois. The regiment left Ottawa with 1050 enlisted men and 46 officers. The regiment fought the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee and served in Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas and Mississippi. The 4th Cavalry returned to Springfield in 1864, and the reenlisted soldiers were consolidated with the 12th Illinois Cavalry Regiment in Texas on June 14, 1865.

    Scope and Contents

    This collection of six large record books from Company M of the 4th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry consists of a clothing book, a descriptive roll of the company, morning reports, the record of a general court martial, and an order book. In addition to specific information regarding people and events, these books provide insight into the general routine and living conditions for Civil War soldiers.
