Scope and Content

This small collection of papers, gift of Neuhaus' son, Robert Neuhaus, December 29, 1964, includes correspondence, sketchbooks and loose sketches, photographs of his work, announcements of lectures, scrapbooks of clippings relating primarily to his painting, and personalia.

Biography

Eugen Neuhaus, painter and professor of art at the University of California, Berkeley, was born in Barmen, Germany, on August 18, 1897. After his graduation from art schools in Kassel and Berlin, he came to California in 1904. From 1907 he taught drawing at the University of California and, in 1923, established the Art Department. He also lectured in the history and theory of art at Mills College from 1918 to 1927, wrote books on the appreciation of art and on American art, and continued to paint, specializing in landscapes.
