Contents
Collection consists of many groups of photographs commemorating activities and events
involving Pittman and the NAACP Regional Office during the years 1951-1970; publications
issued by the Office or other organizations active in civil rights during this period;
and Pittman's office files maintained during this period, including some personal
material. Organized into three series: photographs, publications, and NAACP Regional
Office files.
Biography
Tarea Hall Pittman was a native of Bakersfield, Calif., a member of one of the pioneer
families of Kern County. She received her BA degree from San Fancisco Stae Collega and a
Master of Social Welfare degree from the University of California, Berkeley. While
attending Berkeley, she began a career in radio, founding the program "Negroes in the
news" with which she would be affiliated for many years. Always acrive in civic affairs,
Pittman began her affiliation with the NAACP by accepting an appointment as field
secretaty. She later headed the West Coast Regional Office until her retirement in 1970.
